Television Film Project:
"From Wharf Rats to Lords of The Docks"

Ian Ruskin/Warner Grand TheaterThe Harry Bridges Institute and Ian Ruskin’s Harry Bridges Project co-sponsored the filming of the one-man play “From Wharf Rats to Lords of the Docks." Ian Ruskin's play brings to life the contributions made by Harry Bridges and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) to working class people worldwide. Now, Academy Award winning director Haskell Wexler has filmed the play for television.

Filming took place in San Pedro, California at the beautiful art deco Warner Grand Theatre on Saturday, July 26th 2003. Haskell also interviewed audience members and those who knew Harry for possible inclusion in the film.

A reception was held before the play and ILWU Local 13 hosted a “1934 Era Street Party" after the filming. We had participation from leaders and the rank and file up and down the West Coast, as well as our friends in docker unions from around the world. International delegates were acknowledged from the floor and given the opportunity to speak at the Street Party.

Hundreds of labor supporters were a part of this historical filming and the Harry Bridges Institute was proud to offer assistance to a number of visitors while they were in San Pedro.
