Multicultural Bands Performed
at Harry Bridges Celebration!
World Cruise Center
- San Pedro
Held Saturday July 28th, Noon - 4:00 PM
A highlight of the week-long
Harry Bridges celebration was a parade across the Vincent Thomas Bridge from
Terminal Island to San Pedro. Delegates from over twenty different countries
as well as a large labor contingent from throughout Los Angeles participated
in a tribute to the early crusader for international laborer's rights.
It only seems appropriate
that the music fit the mood. A fine mix of music headlined the entertainment.
World Tribe, a South Bay group, connects diverse sounds and
influences of Bob Marley floating with Tower of Power and Sublime to come
up with a fusion of Reggae, Rock, Hip Hop and Funk destined to be a knock
out! World Tribe's live appearances are noteworthy, having opened
for No Doubt, Foo Fighters, Third World, Burning Spear, Common Sense, Yellowman,
Pato Banton, Run DMC, Eek-A-Mouse, Big Mountain and Ben Harper.
Setting a different
tone was Juan Chapa Y Su Conjunto, a lively "Tejano"
brand of music. The San Gabriel Valley based band has performed at the Chicano
Music Awards and at the Conjunto Festival among others and has opened for
such notables as Selena, The Desperadoz and La Sombra.
The entertainment portion of the program followed the 10:00 AM parade, starting
at about 1:00 PM. The celebration at the World Cruise Center, next to the
Catalina Terminal in San Pedro, also included free hot dogs and cake, booths,
fire boat display and dancers. All were invited to participate in the parade.
