Held July 23 - 29, 2001 in San Pedro

Harry Bridges, founder of the International Longshoremen and Warehousemen's Union (ILWU), helped create one of the most democratic, progressive unions in American history. Here's how we celebrated his life and legacy:

Opening - Special Harry Bridges historical exhibit, Celebrating Harry Bridges and his work with the ILWU at the L.A. Maritime Museum.

Labor History Walk - 11 am and 12:30 pm – old timers gave historical overviews at designated locations in San Pedro.  Meeting at 6th and Beacon Streets - Bloody Thursday Monument.

Harbor Boat Tours - with historical and harbor future commentary 12 noon and 1:30 PM  These tours took 100 youth and 50 adults.  No reservations were required.

WEDNESDAY, July 25

Film showing and discussion, “Bread and Roses 7 PM San Pedro - reception Justice for Janitors 6-7 PM Arcade building (across from Warner Grand Theatre).

Harbor Art Walk Artists Reception and Silent Auction - 5-7 PM– Arcade building (across from Warner Grand Theatre).

“From Wharf Rats to Lords of the Docks” - A one-man Harry Bridges Play and readings featuring Ian Ruskin and guest celebrity performers at the Warner Grand Theatre, San Pedro 7:30 PM  Tickets were $10 in advance through the Harry Bridges Institute.

SATURDAY, July 28

Walk the Bridge
Music and Booths

Parade over Vincent Thomas Bridge -Terminal Island to San Pedro began at 10 am with the closing of the Bridge.  Parking shuttles were available from San Pedro or T.I.  with parking in lots under the Bridge in San Pedro or in Federal Building parking lot on Terminal Island.  Ferry Street Exit.

Celebration at World Cruise Center - in San Pedro followed the parade, including: Food, entertainment, art & craft show 12 noon to 4 PM at Berths 91-93 in San Pedro.

Lane Victory Cruise and Air Show - limited number of tickets were available at $100 each.
